What is the impact of spelling and grammatical errors on a website?

We have plenty of anecdotal evidence on the Internet but there does not seem to be any academic research looking specifically and objectively at the relationship between online linguistic accuracy and consumer confidence.

Therefore, I am currently collecting some statistics on whether bad spelling, grammar and punctuation negatively affect your confidence in a website.

I have a lot of responses so far (thank you to all of you who took part in the survey). If you have not yet taken part, PLEASE click on the following link and answer my one very quick question: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FYPJ2SH

Thank you!

Have you looked into the Stanford Web Credibility Project? It has a tremendous amount of information on how readers’ perceive the credibility of a website, including the impact of misspellings, typos, and grammatical errors. I haven’t looked at the research recently, so I don’t know if study results have been updated because many of the studies I looked at were from 2000 and 2002.

Also, conducting a voluntary survey of your readers won’t give you anything more than anecdotal evidence.
