Towards the end of last year we published the statistics showing the most popular languages used on Twitter. They were:
1: English (34%)
2: Japanese (16%)
3: Spanish (12%)
4: Indonseian (8%)
5: Portuguese (6%)
Those stats are interesting in themselves, but they become even more so when you compare them with the most widely spoken languages in the world. They are:
I am not surprised to see Spanish and English on both lists. But where are Mandarin, Hindi or Russian on the Top Twitter Language List? With more than one billion Mandarin speakers, 497 million Hindustani speakers and 277 million Russian, surely these must be the social media languages of the future.
